Mid-States Powersports connects dealership to customs
By R. Kabel
Mid-States Powersports of Grimes says they’re Iowa’s premier Arctic Cat, Aprilia Motorcycle and Scooter dealer. Co-owner Jon Seibert has been in the industry for around seven years and nearly 20 years for partner Randy Claude. “Jon got in by spending a lot of money on bikes as a hobby,” Said Claude with a wink.
“I got in through building numerous custom bikes, servicing and sales and was a Bourget Bike Works dealer and also owned Wild heart customs in Des Moines, Iowa. We combined our talents about seven years ago and have weathered every storm.”

Do you know?
Scott Tillman
Scott Tillman, a 12-year resident of Maxwell, IA, says he first was bitten by the motorcycle bug around the age of twelve. Born in Maxwell Klinger’s home town of Toledo, Ohio, Tillman moved with family to Milwaukee, WI when he was young.
“I started out riding a friends’ Honda 50 cc mini bike. Then I got my own homemade mini bike powered by a Briggs and Stratton engine. After a year or so I bought my first enduro, a 1962 Yamaha 80 Trailmaster and rode it on a dirt track in an empty lot next to my home, and at a local dirt race track.”
These days he’s married to his lovely wife Tracy with their three kids, Nick 17, Shelbi 16 and Joey 8. Working as a courier DOT/CDL for FedEx Express for last 19 years, Tillman is still reminiscent of his youthful riding.

Three wheeling it
Three wheels come in many different forms
By Sean Goulart, Editor, www.MXNewsfeed.com
They say “Three’s a crowd”… but we beg to differ… Three wheels on a motorcycle can offer all the freedom, performance and comfort that one rider could want, as well as opening up riding dreams for those who may be handicapped, injured or just want a really cool looking, comfortable to ride, head turning street machine.
Many of the advances in this world of trikes have originated from a small but brilliant group of motorheads in Colo, Iowa known as DRT Bros. Let’s take a look at where they came from and what they’ve got cooking.
DRT Bros are a unique group in that they truly are a “brothers owned and operated company.” Dan and Tim Mortenson are the founding brothers, along with their good friend Don whom they call a “brother from another mother.” The remaining DRT team members are Josh, Justin, Linda, Chris and Brenda.

Eldonna Lewis Fernandez
1500 miles with The Diamond Posse
By Becky Shimek
Eldonna’s life’s mission is to help others; especially those who wear our country’s uniform. After serving 23 years in the U.S. Air Force, now a retired MSgt., Eldonna has a visceral understanding of the hardships and plight of our military men and women. She was deployed to the Middle East after 9/11 and suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a familiar term we civilians have heard often since the start of this War, but a condition most of us can hardly relate to.
Since her retirement in 2003, and now claiming victory over PTSD, Eldonna has dedicated herself to helping others “Take Control of the Handlebars of your Life” a message that incorporates her passion for motorcycling. Through her seminars, books, and public speaking, Eldonna has inspired and touched many with her wisdom. Now, along with a handful of other fellow female riders dubbed “The Diamond Posse,” she will take her message of hope and encouragement to our wounded warriors across a 1,500-mile motorcycle journey in an effort to raise money for the Fallen Hero’s Fund, which supports the Center for the Intrepid, a private funded state-of-the-art facility that treats veterans with catastrophic injuries.

BMW new innovations
Technologies brought into one package
By Tony Tice
NOTE: When I approached Throttler magazine with the idea of writing this BMW article, they said “You have “X” amount of words and don’t make it about ball bearings.” I’ve submitted a couple stories in the past that were broken down to finite technical details (what some refer to as ball bearings) and it was “suggested” that I don’t quit my day job. Let’s see how this goes, shall we?
I’m sure that the majority of the motorcycle enthusiasts that have read any motorcycle magazines at all, have read something on the new BMW S 1000RR. The many accolades it has won are the results of a lot of hard work and good “note” taking by the BMW World Superbike racing team. This bike owes some of the final settings to that team directly.

Harley-Davidson® Fat Boy® Lo
Lower and darker than the original, with undeniable street presence
By Paul James, Harley-Davidson.com
The 2010 Fat Boy Lo motorcycle is a new riff on one of the greatest hits to ever roll out of the Harley-Davidson design studio. Darker and lower than that original icon of fat-custom style, the Fat Boy Lo retains the bold presence of the Fat Boy while offering a fresh interpretation of the motorcycle that still defines the segment.
Dressed in satin chrome and denim black, the Fat Boy Lo model features a reshaped seat and handlebar that places its rider “in” the motorcycle, with the lowest seat height of any Harley-Davidson model. The half-moon footboards, black wheels and leather tank panel help Fat Boy Lo rock to a singular, fat-custom beat.

Grass track racing
The next big thing in motocross?
By Sean Goulart, MXNewsfeed.com
Here at Throttler magazine, we get a lot of emails and calls about racing in general. Sometimes these emails contain links to videos or photos and last week we got one that really caught our eye. It was about a new phenomenon called grass track racing and it could be the next big thing in motocross because it’s a blast for all ages!
What is Grass Track Racing (GTR)?
GTR originated in the UK and is very popular there as well as in Canada. It’s basically where you take a farmers field, mow it, lay out stakes for a course and race specialized bikes on it. It usually contains a slight bit of elevation change, no big doubles or triples, sometimes obstacles like logs and tires, long straights and lots of tight corners.

PUBLISHER'S NOTE
Hot damn!
Summer’s finally here
Well hot damn! The riding season is really in full swing now. June is such an exciting time for us motorcycle folks. Those cagers are finally getting used to seeing us out on the road, the deer have tamed down a bit… mostly staying back from the road, and we’ve got just about 15 solid hours of daylight on any given day. Don’t you just love summer?
Here in the Midwest, the approach of summer must be a little like seeing the ocean for the first time. You’re never entirely sure you’ll ever actually see it until you do. Here’s to hot summer day trips and cool summer night rides.
Last month we highlighted a few big events coming up in June, including Awesome Biker Nights in Sioux City, IA and J&P Cycles Open House in Anamosa, IA. One thing is certain there are a ton of other events throughout the Midwest this summer. It’s going to be just too damn hard to decide how to plan your time. If you’re anything like us, you’re really struggling to juggle all the rides, bike nights and rallies that you want to attend while still being married and/or parenting and/or working. How do people do it all?
Speaking of excitement, we’ve got some great stuff for you in this issue. Tony Tice is back writing for us again as he sings the praises of a new BMW ride. Also, our good friends at HelmetHair.com did a great interview with a remarkable and inspirational lady named Eldonna Lewis Fernandez who, as a veteran of our armed forces has made it her life’s mission to help her fellow veterans “take control of the handlebars” by empowering our nation’s wounded veteran soldiers.
Our cover article tells the success story of our comrades over at Mid-States Powersports and highlights their evolution in the power sports industry and also discusses the impressive custom success they’ve had.
Lastly, our own “brothers from another mother” (DRT Bros.) join us for a fresh look at the influence they’ve had and continue to have in the growing trike segment of the market.
Welcome to June… and hold on tight July will be gone before you know it.
As Always Ride Hard
