Harley-Davidson’s new
2009 entries

Back to the roots, and looking to the future

By Harley Rhoades

Harley-Davidson (H-D) has some new things going on for 2009. We have all heard about the new bagger frames and all the changes on the Touring bikes for ’09 — we will talk about that some other time — but there are a couple of exciting things never seen from H-D before.

H-D has introduced the XR1200 Sportster (starting at $10,799), a powerful new H-D hot rod motorcycle that was initially designed and launched only in European markets last April. Inspired by the XR-750, the most dominating American dirt track racing motorcycle of all-time, the Harley-Davidson XR1200 is now poised to boost adrenaline levels on streets, roads and highways around the world.

Coca-Cola® isn’t just for
Jack Daniels

Coke® syrup racing is renewing its
charisma on the racing circuit

By Alec “Chop” Brynnenson

In 1886, Coca-Cola® was officially presented to Americans to quench their thirsts. It has also been known to dissolve a penny, clean corrosion from a battery, relieve the sting from a jelly fish, treat children’s colic, clean tile grout and of course, mix well with Jack Daniels and many other whiskeys.

After a long absence, Coca-Cola® is renewing its status in racing not only as a major sports sponsor, but also as a sticky assistant to flat track racing. Coke® syrup racing (a generalized term) has been around for at least 30 years, however, its origin is still a mystery. Whom the first track promoter was to splash Coca-Cola® syrup on a flat track is buried in its lore and anyone you ask, will say they learned it from an old-timer.

Do you know?

Jeff Brandt

Jeff Brandt is your typical motorcycle enthusiast and rider with a very untypical ride. But you wouldn’t know it unless you asked him.

Brandt started riding dirt bikes when he was 14 years old. He’s owned everything from Hondas to a Suzuki 750, as well as a Kawasaki, a Gold Wing, three Sportster Harley-Davidsons and a 2003 Heritage Softail. And at age 54, Brandt doesn’t show any signs of slowing down as he can be seen at several motorcycle events, bike nights and rallies in Central Iowa.

So what makes Brandt’s 2003 Harley-Davidson so special? It’s where he went to retrieve it. Rescued from the ravaging floodwater and horrific aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Brandt truly has a one-of-a-kind ride in Iowa, if not the Midwest.

Victory tweaks its
2009 lineup8

Larger engines and a few fat tires
rejuvenate the usual flavors

By Tony Tice

Polaris Industries’ Victory marquee is celebrating its 10 years in business with the release of a special Anniversary Edition Vision motorcycle that is marked as such. And to top that off, the Arlen Ness company has added a few of its own signature series editions that are available in limited numbers.

The Victory Kingpin comes in its usual flavors, the Standard, the Low, the Tour, and the all-black 8-Ball. All big-fendered bikes are staples of the Victory lineup, while both the Low and the 8-Ball versions come standard with single seats.

2009 Honda CRF450R
unofficial test

Looking for a new bike, or a fan of Honda?
Look no farther.

By Tony Wenck

When I first saw the new 2009 Honda CRF450R on display at the Indianapolis Moto GP last September, I was stoked. Like a lot of CRF450 fans eagerly awaiting their ride on a machine that had created so much buzz that it had reached legendary status before Honda released it, I hadn’t been this excited about a dirt bike in a long time.

As advertised, the Honda CRF450R is very different than anything we’ve ever seen. Honda basically threw away the blue prints from the CRF450 of old and redesigned it from the ground up.

Iron Hearse ride to the sky

Lloyd Robbins brings innovation and
dignity to riders passing on

By Rick “The Rocket” Hood

One day we will all need to take the trip, and the ride to our final resting place will most likely be in a hearse. But have you ever thought about what exactly the hearse will look like?

Lloyd Robbins of Des Moines created Iron Hearse Destinations after he saw an article on a motorcycle hearse in a magazine about six years ago. After pondering the thought and talking about it with friends, Robbins thought he might have a niche for Iowa.

Robbins, a Navy veteran, built his glass-sided caisson to give people a unique way to arrive at their final resting place. Pulling it behind a Harley-Davidson Electra Glide trike,
